Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan, it seems, has finally managed to win over his boss Jose Mourinho. The Armenia international arrived at Old Trafford this term after a brilliant season with Borussia Dortmund.
He was voted the Bundesliga player of the year last season after scoring 23 goals and registering 32 assists in all competitions for the German outfit. However, he was surprisingly left out of the team for the first few months by Mourinho.
Mkhitaryan was handed a rare start against Zorya Luhansk and the midfielder finally showed why the club paid £26.3 million for him. The Armenian gave a sublime performance and scored his first goal in United shirt.
Delighted with the performance, Mourinho said that the player has managed to turn things around due to his strong mentality.
“It was a strong mentality,’ Mourinho said after United’s 2-0 win over the Ukranian side.”He was determined to fight against his difficult adaptation.
“He worked hard physically and tactically – the talent was there, we knew that when we bought him.
“Now he’s playing good – in the Premier League, Europa League and EFL Cup, and now the goal means a little more happiness for him, so I’m very pleased,” he added.
Meanwhile, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has insisted that Mkhitaryan should start for the Red Devils ahead of Juan Mata.
When asked whether the former Dortmund star should replace Mata in the upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur, he said: “Three or four weeks ago I thought it was only a matter of time before he started producing and we’re seeing that now, with a little run of games, he’s starting to produce.
“What’s he got different from Mata is that pace. Mata’s got the trick but has he got the pace to go past people? I don’t think he has.
“I think Mkhitaryan has got the trick and the pace to go past people and produce what he did tonight.”
