Borussia Dortmund has revealed they are not willing to sell defender Neven Subotic, but speculations continue to grow that the defender is close to rejoining his former manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
The new Liverpool boss who was in charge of Borussia Dortmund until last season is a fan of Subotic’s abilities and he is reportedly not satisfied with the defensive options he has in hand at Anfield.
In fact, Klopp has already hijacked Subotic once, bringing the centre-back to Dortmund with him from his fellow German side Mainz in 2008.
However, it will be not easy for Klopp to make another reunion between the two as the German side’s sporting director Michael Zorc revealed letting Subotic go is not on their agenda. Also a possible extension to Subotic’s contract, which ends in 2018, is said to be discussed very soon.
“We are still in the first half of the season. From our end, there are no considerations with regard to releasing him,” Zorc told German media outlet Bild when he was asked about Subotic.
“But we will discuss the situation(with regards to his contract) with him eventually, of course”, he further said.
Despite Zorc’s reluctance, German newspaper Bild claim Subotic himself is searching for the exit door. The 26-year-old has made only two appearances this season, one match in the Bundesliga and once in the Europa League.
Under Jurgen Klopp, he has two Bundesliga title and one German Cup. Subotic would be open to a move to Liverpool as his desire to stay with Borussia Dortmund has waned in recent times due to the lack of playing time in this campaign. The defender has featured in nearly 250 games for the German side since Klopp brought him from fellow Bundesliga club Mainz in 2008. For his national side Serbia, Subotic has played 36 matches since his debut in 2009.
Liverpool right now need to strengthen their defence line and Jurgen Klopp is eyeing the Westfalenstadion for suitable reinforcements. Mats Hummels was initially linked because he always has been a great admirer of the current Liverpool manager; so he may be an obvious target in January. But Klopp earlier hinted that the highly-rated centre-half might be out of his price range. A more easy target appears to be Hummels’ partner in central defence, the 26-year-old Serbian international Neven Subotic, whose price tag is reportedly less than £15 million.
