Liverpool welcomed Manchester City with the champions determined to keep their title hopes alive by putting extra pressure on Chelsea with a win against the reds. Liverpool had an ambition of their own going in to the game of finishing in the top 4 of the league this season.
Liverpool have been league’s most in-form side while City came win with the best away record this season. With plenty at stake, likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Phillipe Coutinho had even bigger responsibility to deliver for their teams.
Liverpool came away with the 2-1 win on the night and made their claim even stronger to finish in the top 4 while City’s loss could have ended their dreams of retaining their Premier League title.
We take a look at the key talking points from the game where Liverpool outplayed Manchester City to register a famous win.
Manchester City’s title hopes are dead
Manchester City were supremely confident of beating Liverpool to put extra pressure on Chelsea by cutting the gap at the top. As it turns out, Liverpool outplayed City on the night and with goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho City’s title hopes are as good as dead for now.
Philippe Coutinho is turning in to a star
The little Brazilian has been Liverpool’s best player in 2015. Talk about cute passes, wonder goals, or awareness on the ball he has it all and he is showing his class on a regular basis now a days. A wonder goal last week against Southampton and now against City Coutinho did it again.
In the heatmap above we can see how much he is impacting Liverpool’s play going forward and he is more than willing to come out and help the defence. Coutinho did not put a single foot wrong in the game going up against the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Fernandinho.
Time for Manuel Pellegrini to change his tactics
Manuel Pellegrini likes to play with 2 strikers up front, that is good in sweeping away the lesser sides but going against the better sides with similar formation will hurt his side. Pellegrini learnt that lesson the hard way by losing against Barcelona and Liverpool.
City must look to go with 5 in midfield and 1 striker up front to give them extra cover in the mid field and not allowing the opposition to rob them of possession by playing 2 strikers. May be he will realize the fact after tonight’s defeat.
Liverpool will finish in the top 4 on this form
Liverpool has been in an inspiring form winning 8 and drawing 3 of their last 11 games. Liverpool have young players who are hungry for goals and success and Brendan Rodgers has installed the winning mentality to his side. Backed by their brilliant form and a massive win tonight against City will make it very difficult for other sides to stop them from finishing in top 4 this season.
Manchester City must take a hard look at themselves
People debate about City going on to become as great as their city rival Manchester United but the lack of hunger which is quite obvious in City’s play this season makes me hard to believe they can even win a title in upcoming seasons.
City have always suffered the 2nd season syndrome. After winning a title they always surrender it the next season. There is a lack of motivation and determination to win the following season as well. There must be a solution to this or else City will become a side with short-term success only.
