According to reports, Liverpool have opened talks to sign Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri.

According to the very reliable italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, Liverpool have opened talks to sign Shaqiri for €20m.

The 22-year-old made just 17 league appearances under Pep Guardiola last season with 7 of those coming on as a substitute, he has fallen behind the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Brendan Rodgers is keen to add more attacking options, after his side qualified for the Champions League.

Recently, Shaqiri expressed his desire to get more playing time on the pitch and the possibility of leaving Bayern Munich only for a Champions League club.

Xherdan Shaqiri: “We’ll see. I’m not going to go through another year like this.

“If not much changes, then I will have to change something.

“I am only disappointed because I have played less.

“I am young and need to develop myself. I want to play in the big games from the beginning, and not just in the league when everything is already clear.

“I want to play at a top club as the Champions League is important to me.

“We will see what happens but I want to fulfil my contract.”

Shaqiri joined Bayern from Basle for a fee of around £10m and he feels Pep Guardiola has less belief in him that former manager Jupp Heynckes.

“I felt Heynckes had more faith in me, but that’s maybe also because Guardiola talks with us less.”

Rodgers sees Shaqiri as an alternative to Adam Lallana, after talks to sign Lallana have dragged on and Southampton are not keen to lower the asking price for their skipper. Liverpool have already signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.
