Liverpool have announced the signing of young right-back Javier Manquillo on two-year loan from Atletico Madrid.

According to The Guardian, Liverpool have the option to buy him for a fee of £5m. Atlético can break the loan arrangement and recall Manquillo for a fee next summer while Liverpool have an option to buy the player outright in 2016. Manquillo won the La Liga with Atletico Madrid last season, though he didn’t feature much for the Spanish champions. Javier Manquillo told the Liverpool official website that he is delighted with the move and hopes to stay at the Merseyside club for many years to come.

“The immediate objective is to do the best I possibly can here,” he said. “I’ve come here to try and secure a place for myself in the side and, if possible, stay here for many more years in the future.

“The club is one of the biggest in Europe, no English club has won more European Cups. It has a superb history and is a team that nowadays any player would want to be a part of. Any footballer would want to come and play here.

“I’m coming here to earn my place in the side,” he said. “And above all, like any footballer to keep on improving as much as I can in training and compete to the very best of my ability.

“I’ve never been to Liverpool before so, but Anfield itself – I think that every player wants to play there.

“The football here is a bit different to elsewhere, particularly Spain. It’s very end-to-end whereas Spanish football is more tactical. The football here is very entertaining to watch.

“From a personal point of view, last year was a disappointing year for me. I was unlucky with injury, but for the group as a whole it was a brilliant year.

“We managed to achieve things that from the outset appeared almost impossible, so let’s hope that I find something similar here; a team that has the highest aspirations and can win as much as possible.”

Liverpool have taken a big gamble by signing the young defender who was no longer needed at Atletico Madrid and someone who has only six La Liga appearances to his name. Glen Johnson has been abysmal throughout pre-season and right-back is a position they need to focus on. Javier becomes the 19th Spaniard to play for Liverpool and the first to arrive from Atletico since Argentinian midfielder Maxi Rodriguez in 2010. Javier Manquillo becocmes the seventh signing for Brendan Rodgers this summer after arrivals of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, Emre Can, Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi.

Liverpool are also closing in on Sevilla‘s Alberto Moreno and deal is expected to be wrapped up this week. Pepe Reina has left the club for Bayern Munich in a £2.5m deal.
