The 24-year-old fullback will be Liverpool’s sixth signing of the summer after deals for James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino were completed. He is expected to be on Merseyside today to sign a five-year contract. Liverpool stuck a deal with Southampton last week, but it wasn’t completed as Clyne was on a holiday.
Nathaniel Clyne has been signed as a replacement for Glen Johnson, who left the club as a free agent. Liverpool’s initial bid of £10million was rejected in May, but an increased offer was accepted by Saints for Clyne, who had just 12 months left in his contract at St.Mary’s. Southampton have already signed Sporting Lisbon defender Cedric Soares as a replacement.
Earlier, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared his thoughts on the capture of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.
He posted: “I saw Nathaniel Clyne at St Mary’s after a game last season and told him to sign for LFC – he took my advice!
“I think it’s another good signing for the club to go along with the other business already done.
“The early deals were a couple of squad players and also James Milner, who are all an improvement on what’s currently in the squad.”
