Michael Carrick has played a key role in Manchester United’s resurgence this season under Louis Van Gaal. At 33, Carrick will not stick for long and Van Gaal has started looking for apt replacements for his vice-captain once he retires from the game.
Manchester United have identified Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan as the ideal man to replace Carrick at Old Trafford. Gundogan, 24 is at the right age and certainly has all the necessary skills to succeed in the holding midfield role for Man United.
Michael Carrick has recently signed a 12-month extension to his contract and has been the mainstay in United’s midfield with his unmatched passing range and ability to dictate the pace of a football match. Carrick does a wonderful job in sitting in front of his defense and allowing others to play free-flowing football.
Van Gaal understands the importance of replacing Carrick with a similar minded player as it compliments his philosophy and style of play. Van Gaal sees Gundogan as the man to replace Carrick at Man United in longer run.
Gundogan has one year remaining in his current contract which will expire in 2016. Dortmund have not been able to convince their midfield ace to sign the contract extension and will listen to the offers this summer.
Jurgan Klopp’s decision to quit as Dortmund manager after the current season has indicated a clear-out at Dortmund and Gundogan along with Mats Hummels lead the exit lines at Signal Eduna park. Ironically, both Hummels and Gundogan are on course to join Manchester United in the summer.
