Paris Saint-Germain left-back Lucas Digne has why he joined Italian side AS Roma on loan snubbing Liverpool interest.
Liverpool were linked with him as the manager Brendan Rodgers was concerned with Alberto Morano’s defensive ability but could not get the Frenchman who joined AS Roma instead.
The 22-year-old French international has stated the reasons why he opted for AS Roma switch and he insisted that Champions League football was his first priority which Liverpool could not offer him.
“Both the Roma fans and my teammates have welcomed me really well,” Digne told Canal Football Club, quoted by the Daily Express.
“I was pleased to be immediately put at ease by my teammates, they gave me confidence and have joked around with me from day one.”
“Rudi Garcia has played an important role because I know him from Lille, he really wanted me at Roma.”
“Other teams also wanted me, but I quickly chose Roma, playing in the Champions League was a big factor.”
Despite being highly rated across Europe, Digne has struggled to get playing time at Parc des Princes since joining the Ligue 1 Champions Paris Saint-Germain from Lille.
He needed regular playing time to keep his growth going and to get a place for France in UEFA European Championship 2016.
He has already started for Roma this term in a 2-1 victory over Juventus, which was a big scalp for the Giallorossi so early in the season.
In Digne’s place, Liverpool secured the services of Joe Gomez from Charlton who at the age of just 18 has managed to seamlessly make the transition from Championship to Premier League football.
However, Liverpool fans won’t be unhappy to miss on him as new signing 18-year-old Joe Gomez has done really well at left back position despite being a center back predominantly.
