Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged his former club to sign Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the final week of the transfer window.
33 year old Ibrahimovic has been linked with a PSG exit this summer, while the Sweden captain has suggested he is planning a “surprise” move should he decide to leave Paris when his contract expires next year.
Even though the striker admitted he would have a “big problem” playing at United under Louis van Gaal after their difficult relationship at Ajax, Scholes believes Ibrahimovic could be a good fit for the club as they look to bolster their front line following Saturday’s stalemate with Newcastle.
“Centre-forward is a priority because there doesn’t look like there’s enough goals in the team at the moment, from any position,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“You need more than one [striker]. They’ve got Chicharito and young James Wilson, who is a really good player, but last year he didn’t really take his chance when he had the chance to do it.”
“They have lost two top centre-forwards in [Radamel] Falcao and Robin van Persie. Okay, so Falcao wasn’t great while he was here, but he has been a top centre-forward, so they need something else.”
“I wonder if they could take a chance on Ibrahimovic for a year. Maybe he could do something in the Van Persie mould. I don’t care whether he gets on with Van Gaal or not, as long as he scores goals.”
“I don’t think they need much else. They have good players on the bench, but they need a centre-forward.”
United have been linked with Barcelona forward Neymar and Real Madrid’s world-record signing Gareth Bale after Pedro — a reported target for Van Gaal for a number of weeks — left Barcelona for Chelsea this week.
Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole echoed Scholes’ views, as he urged United to make ambitions bids to sign PSG striker Edinson Cavani or Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema.
“Manchester United need a centre-forward who’s going to score goals,” Cole said. “It’s difficult because there aren’t many out there but you’ve got to get yourself one of Cavani, Benzema.”
