Manchester City are ready to battle with their local rivals Manchester United for Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi, according to reports from Metro. Both Louis Van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini are looking to strengthen their defense line and have identified the commanding Valencia Centre back as the solution of their defensive issues.
Manchester United suffered heavily with their defensive problems last season. David De Gea managed to cover some defensive gaps but their fans and management understand that they need to strengthen their defence line heavily. Otamendi could be the answer to the problems. Otamendi’s fellow countryman Marcos Rojo is currently a Manchester United player who signed for them last season. A defensive partnership between the two would be helpful for both their club and thei country and Louis Van Gaal is looking to take advantage of this. Rojo may persuade his fellow defense partner to move to Old Trafford.
The same thing is with Manchester City also. They never faced any problems in scoring goals but they concede easy goals on occasions. Captain Vincent Kompany did not have a great season. New recruit Mangala also failed to impress. Martin Demichelis is also getting old and they need a good centre back to challenge for the title next season. Getting Otamendi would serve their purpose. Manchester City also has four Argentine players in the form of Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta, Willy Caballero and Martin Demichelis. Otamendi may favour a move to the Citizens due to this reason also.
The 27 years old centre back is currently on national duty with Argentina at Copa America. Otamendi had a brilliant last season at Valencia. Otamendi appeared 35 times for the Los Che in LA Liga 2014-15. He is known for his impressive aerial ability and interceptions. He had an impressive 2.9 tackles per match. His interceptions per match is even more impressive with 3.1. He had 7.3 clearances per game.
Stats reflect how good defender he is and why so many big clubs are wanting him. Manchester United have been linked heavily with Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos recently. Their persuit for the World Cup winner and two times Euro Cup winner could leave the door open for City to snatch Nicolas Otamendi.
