Manchester City to rival Manchester United for Sergio Ramos

Manchester United’s hope of landing Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos were dealt a huge blow, after it was revealed that rivals Manchester City are ready to challenge for the Spaniard’s signature.

Ramos is unsettled at the Bernabeau due to contract dispute, with the Spanish capital sides’ hierarchy reluctant to meet his demands. Pedro Riesco; Ramos’ brother and agent Rene’s friend last week had revealed that it will be ‘difficult’ for his client to stay with Madrid.

“With everything that has happened it will be very difficult for Sergio Ramos to stay at Madrid,” he had said.

United in return had hoped to take advantage of the growing uncertainty, with the Old Trafford side even seeing two bids rejected for the World Cup winner.

But the emergence of rivals City to as a possible destination could scupper the Red Devils’ plans. The Citizens, who endured a disappointing campaign, will spend big this summer, having lined up bids for Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Wolfsburg’s Kevin De Bruyne.

CITY THAT WAY?: Man City have emerged as a possible destination for Ramos

What happens next?

City only have three central defenders in captain Vincent Kompany, Martín Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala, with one of the former two nearing his thirties, while other is 34. One would imagine that a move for Ramos makes complete sense, with big money signing Eliaquim Mangala scuffling under the Premier League conditions.

On the contrary, City might not have enough to lure the 29-year-old to the Etihad. There are also growing concerns over Financial Fair Play issue, which has restricted them from spending to a ‘significantly limit’ after being fined last season. Manuel Pellegrini saw his Champions League squad slash down to 21 players, cut from the usual 25, and will want to avoid a repeat of any such farce. Besides, the depletion of their homegrown quota due to several departures might lead them to search elsewhere before they count a huge penny for Ramos.
