Manchester United, like many a game at Old Trafford, needed just one goal to see off their opponents who made the trip from the Merseyside in a stifled encounter on Sunday. Louis van Gaal’s men showed great discipline at the end when Everton turned the screws on and showed once again that they are capable of getting results against big teams this season.

This victory takes them closer to a top-4 spot and with not many games left, every game and every point earned is hard fought. Here are the player ratings for both the teams from this game:

Manchester United:

De Gea (3):

Did superbly well to stop Jagielka from close range in the second half but was hardly tested otherwise.

M Rojo (2.5):

Had plenty of trouble tracking back against the likes of Deuofeu and hardly provided any width in the final third.

C Smalling (3):

Was almost punished after slipping at the back but had a comfortable game against the Belgian Romelu Lukaku.

D Blind (3.5):

Won almost everything that was thrown at him until he was substituted after picking up a hamstring injury in the second half.

M Darmian (3):

Could have provided more of an attacking outlet but stuck to his task well at the back defending on either flank.

M Schneiderlin (3):

Was caught in possession plenty of times but grew into the game and played a good role in the mid-field.

M Carrick (3):

Provided good cover for his back four and could have been a bit more adventurous with the ball.

J Lingard (2.5):

Hardly provided any support in attack but showed his defensive abilities as United shut stop right at the end.

J Mata (2.5):

Got no space and time on the ball and could not affect the game as he would have liked.

A Martial (4):

A man of the match performance from the youngster who was a constant threat in the final third and also scored the winner to show for his excellent work throughout the game.

M Rashford (3):

Gave the Everton back-line plenty to think about with his constant running and never-give-up attitude in the final third.

T Fosu-Mensah (3)

A Valencia (2.5)

A Herrera (2.5)

J Robles (2.5):

Could do nothing to stop the goal but was shaky with the ball at his feet at times.

L Baines (3):

Lost the United youngster in the build up to goal but was generally in command and also pinpoint with his set-piece deliveries.

J Stones (3):

Made a number of crucial interceptions and also showed his passing range with more than a couple of cracking passes into the Everton striker.

P Jagielka (3):

Came close to scoring twice in the second half and had a decent game at the back for the visitors.

S Coleman (2.5):

Lost possession a couple of times and also found it hard against the likes of Martian on the flank on a tough night for the wing back.

J McCarthy (3):

Took a knock early in the game but recovered well to keep the ball rolling for the Toffees in front of goal.

T Cleverly (3):

Tried his best to get one over his former team and played a decent game in the middle of the park for Everton.

R Barkley (2):

Showed glimpses of what he is capable but was just not his night as he often lost the ball in dangerous positions.

A Lennon (2):

Hardly created an opening for himself on the flank as he failed to provide any kind of service into the box all night long.

G Deulofeu (3.5):

Was a constant threat for the United back line as he found plenty of space and time on the ball on the flank. But could not provide the defense breaking delivery into the box even after a number of tries.

R Lukaku (2.5):

Was a lone soldier in front for Everton as he often lacked support up front and hardly had any clear chances to give his side a goal.

O Niasse (2)

K Mirallas (2.5)
