Manchester United are one of the biggest spenders in the summer transfer window ahead of the new season with the new manager Jose Mourinho making a number of high-profile signings help his adventure at Old Trafford.

However, the manager is still looking to add to his squad, especially in defense to give his team a chance to compete on all four fronts in the new season.

This has seen the club linked with a number of center backs recently but have not been able to get their hands on any yet.

But recent reports have now emerged that Jose Mourinho is now interested in bringing Southampton man Jose Fonte to Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils have been linked with the Portuguese international for over a week and it now looks like they have stepped up their pursuit of the defender. According to reports today, Manchester United have held talks with the Saints for a potential move this summer.

Manchester United have the likes of Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Daley Blind and Jose Mourinho is said to be not so delighted with his options at the back.

He is also set to lose Eric Bailly when he leaves the club for the Africa Cup of Nations in January. This has seen the manager reportedly make a move for the experienced Jose Fonte this summer.

Claude Puel, the new manager at Southampton is reportedly not ready to block a move and with Manchester United ready to make a £8m, it might be enough to land the 32-year old this summer.

If he makes the move, Fonte might displace the likes of Phil Jones and even Marcos Rojo who might be sold in the next few days.

The EURO16 winner is valued at £10m by Southampton but as already revealed, it is understood that a £8m bid might be enough to lure him out of the St Marys.

It is also reported that the player has mentally decided to make the move and has spoken to the club’s owners and the manager about his future.

So this might be the only piece of business from Manchester United this season that does not involve big bucks. Do you think Jose Fonte will be a hit at Manchester United?
