Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gaitan has been a major subject of interest in this transfer window

Portugal media A Bola claims that Manchester United are still in pole position to sign Gaitan. The club have had verbal agreement over the deal while Gaitan’s agent also spoke about a pending negotiation with the Old Trafford club.

According to A Bola, The Red Devils are ready to offer Gaitan a higher wage as well as offering Benfica better transfer fee compared to Atletico Madrid who are also interested in the Argentine.

Louis van Gaal is looking to add creativity to his midfield this summer as he looks to mount a title challenge for the upcoming season and could make an offer for Gaitan. Last campaign the team created just 391 chances, sixth most in the Primeira Liga.

Gaitan has enjoyed five terrific seasons in Portugal where he has lifted two Primeira Liga titles, with the last one coming last campaign.

But Louis Van Gaal’s side is waiting to sort out Gaitan’s compatriot Angel Di Maria’s situation first.

Di Maria wants to stay at Old Trafford but United could still sell him if they get a big money offer for the winger from Bayern Munchen or Paris Saint-Germain who are widely linked with the former Real Madrid star.

Di Maria had a disappionting season at Old Trafford but did well at Copa America for Argentina although had a heartbreat yesterday at the final against Chile who defeated them in penalties.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is another admirer of Gaitan and wants to add quality to his team by signing the Benfica number 10.

But they are also stalling the deal as they have to deal with their number 10 Arda Turan’s situation first who is set to leave Vicente Calderon with clubs like Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester United interested in the Turkish playmaker.

“I have a contract, I’m here and all I want to work as calmly as possible,” Gaitan, who has distanced himself from wild speculations over his future, said as quoted by A Bola.

O Jogo has posted a picture, as you can see above, where Gaitan is undergoing a pre-season routine medical check up, for Benfica.

They add that Benfica’s president and Jorge Mendes have been negotiating with the Atlético’s representative, but no deal has been agreed yet.
