Former Manchester United player and a club legend has truly spoken like a fan and has labeled United’s play as miserable. Van Gaal’s side is currently ranked 3rd in the league but majority of the fans and critics have rallied a cry against the playing style adopted by Van Gaal. Paul Scholes was discussing United’s midweek win over Burnley in his featured column in The Independent and Scholes has further rubbed Van Gaal’s nose in dirt with his comments.
“It does not give me any pleasure to say that at the moment I am struggling to watch Louis van Gaal’s team with any great enjoyment. They beat Burnley on Wednesday night but it was Burnley who had by far the best of the first half.
“At times, United’s football is miserable. To beat opposing teams you have to attack, and to attack you have to take risks. Too few of the players in the current team are prepared to take those risks.”
Scholes was sharing his experience under Sir Alex Ferguson. Scholes said, while his playing days, if he stopped playing forward passes and did not look for the risky passes which could open opponent’s defences then he was dropped from the side and was told to work on his game. Scholes further elaborated why United have always fielded world’s best goal keepers.
Scholes said: United have had some of the best goalkeepers in the world over the years? They needed them because the team committed so many players forward.
Paul Scholes was rather unkind on the current United striking pair of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao. Scholes blasted the two strikers for looking lost on the pitch at times and showing no efforts to change the situation either. Van Persie has not managed to replicate his form under Sir Alex Ferguson in his first season at United which won him his 1st and United’s 20th league title.
Since Ferguson’s departure Van Persie’s form has been on the slide and with every passing game the Dutchman’s finishing seems to get rustier. Then we come to the latest bonanza signing at Old Trafford, Radamel Falcao. Former Atletico Madrid and Porto hitman looks like he has lost his shooting boots and United simply cannot rely on him to score goals.
Scholes questioned Van Gaal’s tactics of continuously rotating Rooney’s position to accommodate Van Persie and Falcao in the team. Rooney has been playing in the right side of the diamond and he was deployed as the defensive midfield player against Burnley after Blind’s injury. Seeing one of the most prolific scorers of his time play in midfield angers Scholes and he went on to say:
“If Van Gaal does not think Rooney is a better option up front than the other two then there really is a problem.”
These comments would add some new problems to Van Gaal’s already filled table with questions over his tactics. He seems to reluctant to do things which people expect him to do. Van Gaal got fans’ response after the Burnley game as there were some boos and jeers directed over United’s play and if things do not turn around quickly there could be bigger problems for Van Gaal, Van Persie and Falcao to deal with.
