Louis Van Gaal may get one of his preferred targets as soon as the window opens as Borussia Dortmund have confirmed their star midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan, has requested to move away from the club this summer. However, the club is hopeful of keeping Hummels with them.
Van Gaal has been for a while requesting a midfielder in the summer after identifying it as a weak spot in the squad. For some time now rumours have been linking the German midfielder with the Reds, but no concrete development has been made on that till date.
But, now the fans and the officials of Manchester United will be on red alert after Gundogan, whose contract runs in 2016, has asked to move away from the club this summer. Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed the player’s intention.
According to Manchester Evening News, Zorc said: “Ilkay told us he wants to leave this summer. But we have received no offers from any clubs for any of our players as of now.”
He was however clear with his intention of keeping Mats Hummels with the club beyond this summer. “Every player always has to make decisions on their future but, for us, the intention is clear to keep Mats.”
Zorc also played down the speculation that Bayern could use Gotze as a makeweight in any deal for Gundogan. He further admitted that Dortmund would prefer the German international to move abroad rather than following the path of former players Gotze and Lewandowski.
He added: “Mario is a Bayern player. I can really not imagine him returning to Dortmund. It would not result in another war if Bayern try to sign Gundogan.”
“Of course, we would prefer it if he did not join a Bundesliga rival, even if Bayern have not really been our rivals in a sporting sense this campaign. There are no offers for now, though” he explained.
