Manchester United have been given the green light to sign AS Roma pair Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.
The duo have played a crucial role in the Giallorossi’s second place finish in the Serie A, but the tabloid claims Rudi Garcia’s side will have to part with their influential duo in order to balance their financial books, and the two could be available in a £66 million double raid.
AS Roma were hit by Financial Fair Play sanctions, which saw them pay a €6million fine, along with the deduction of their squad size from 25 players to 22 for next season’s Champions League. Furthermore, the Rome based side have to avoid making a combined loss of €30million this year, which has compelled them into selling two of their most priced assets.
Nainggolan in particular could be on the way out of Stadio Olimpico, with the Belgian a subject of a negotiation battle between his current employers AS Roma and co-owners Cagliari. The 27-year-old has been ever-present in Rudi Garcia’s setup having initially arrived on loan for €3million, which was further upgraded to a €3million co-ownership deal.
And according to the Corriere dello Sport, Roma are not willing to offer anything more than €11million for the Belgian’s full ownership, while Cagliari are not budging from their €15million valuation of the former Piacenza man.
TUG OF WAR: Roma and Cagliari have yet to agree Nainggolan’s fee
The Red Devils will be in the market for a midfielder in the summer, with manager Louis van Gaal clearing his intentions of buying one. Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan could well fit the bill and might be a part of the major summer overhaul. The prospect of not missing out on playing in the Champions League could possibly persuade the pair to swap Italy for England.
Having secured the services of Dutch attacker Memphis Depay from PSV earlier this month, the Old Trafford side will be busy in the transfer market. Real Madrid’s Welsh winger Gareth Bale, Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba are all linked with a move to Manchester.
