There is no doubt that Manchester United will look to strengthen their defense in the upcoming January transfer window. Despite a dismal start in the Premier League, the Red Devils sit fourth in the standings and are on course with Louis Van Gaal’s main objective for the season. However the Dutch tactician has had to deal with numerous injuries which has forced him to play a makeshift defense in every match so far.

With Rafael injured, Anton Valencia has played at right back while youngsters Paddy McNair and Taylor Blackett have been called up thanks to injuries to Johnny Evans and Phil Jones. Marcos Rojo too has played in centre back while Luke Shaw has looked well in the left wingback role.

Van Gaal however has to still fill the gap left by Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, all of the three who left the club in the summer. United have been linked with Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and Ron Vlaar over the past few months, but recent reports from English Media outlet Daily Star hint that the Old Traffford side will make a move for  unsettled Real Madrid star Raphael Varane.

The 21 year is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the game but he isn’t getting enough game-time at the Santiago Bernabeu. Varane is well below the pecking order behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe and finds his current situation frustrating, “It’s different with the national team. I get more minutes and have more responsibility in the team. The aim is to reach the same level of involvement in the club.”

The Report however mention that Real have quoted a £30m asking price on the French youngster but United have the transfer kitty to  make a move for the player. Varane no doubt will fit in easily in United’s side and would love to jump at the prospect of playing in the Premier League. However will the Manchester side make such a huge bid for a player who is in his early twenties?
