The Red Devils will take on a struggling Everton in the FA Cup semi-final on this evening following an impressive display against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night but they could have scored five that day if not for an in-form Julian Speroni in goal.
Rooney impressed in centre midfield behind the dangerous pair of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial while Matteo Darmian played well in the left back berth.
Van Gaal has always expressed his admiration for the FA Cup and was heavily disappointed after not making it at least to the semi-final stage last season.
United are considered favourites for the trophy with Crystal Palace and Watford battling it out on the other side of the draw and a trophy could only save van Gaal’s job for another season.
There are no new injury concerns to be taken into consideration with Luke Shaw nearing a return from his horrific broken leg at the start of the season.
Here is the predicted line-up for Manchester United that could face Everton today.
Goalkeeper (David de Gea)
There is no doubt about that. The Spaniard has been exceptional this year and has rescued the team single-handedly in most of the games. So he remains an obvious starter for van Gaal.
Defence (Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Fosu-Mensah)
After a great game against Palace, van Gaal may choose to rest Darmian and the young Dutch (Fosu-Mensah) might return to the starting eleven against a crucial game against Everton. Fosu-Mensah has been brilliant since his senior debut and will be hoping to play more minutes before the season is finished. Valencia displayed great improvement in his performance and in his crosses recently and remains a tireless worker for the team. Chris Smalling and Daley Blind are the best choice center backs van Gaal has, so, they will be starting the game for sure.
Midfield (Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Rooney)
The 4-3-3 formation worked really well for Louis van Gaal in the last couple of matches and snatched a good result as well. So, he might opt for the same formation where Fellaini is poised to face his previous club and, Rooney and Schneiderlin will be at the heart of the field alongside Fellaini.
Fellaini can be used further up the pitch and be entrusted with the task of being a menace for the Everton backline to deal with. The Belgian impressed in such a role previously and with United desperately needing results by hook or crook, it is a tactic that is not likely to be frowned upon by supporters. Rooney also remains an attacking option.
Attack (Mata, Rashford, Martial)
Rashford was taken off in the Crystal Palace match but that was for his own security as the young lad needs some rest. Meanwhile, Mata in the right and Martial at left side would have to be the ideal front three to lead United attack. Martial and Rashford, while playing together can cause some serious problems for the Toffees defence as both of them bolsters with great pace and possess a brilliant finishing technique.
With Rashford being handed the responsibility for a full-phase attack and Everton’s defence hardly been one of strength this term, it will be an opportunity for United to keep their attacking momentum going and rack up a few goals.
