Manchester United transfer roundup: Argentine star linked, Mourinho in contacts

  • Manchester United are on pursuit to sign Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega, according to a report from The Sun. Banega has been regared as a potential addition to United’s attacking line as the Red Devils are keen to add more firepower to kick start their revival before the end of the month. The Argentinian has netted six times from his 16 appearances for Sevilla and is also believed to have attracted interest from Barcelona this season. If this deal succeeds it would likely be Louis van Gaal’s only transfer dealing this winter.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho is still desperate to overthrow van Gaal to become Manchester United’s next manager, Daily Mail reports. The Portuguese reportedly thinks he can give United the Premier League title in their next campaign if the Old Trafford hierarchy hand him the chance to lead the team. van Gaal is on the brink of  an early exit and the recently sacked Chelsea manager remains the favourite to replace him. Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is believed to be in regular contact with United chief executive Ed Woodward and have also contacted Woodward again after the Red Devil’s shock defeat to Southampton. The contact, as per the report is more of a reminder that Mourinho is still available for work.

United outcast Victor Valdes has signed for Belgian club Standard Liege until the end of this season, according to Daily Mirror. The former Barcelona goalkeeper has featured only twice in last 12 months since his arrival at Old Trafford and those two appearances actually came at the back end of last season and this season he hasn’t been able to play a single matchday squad. The Dutch manager however exiled the 34-year-old Spaniard back in summer, leaving him out of the team for the pre-season trip to America after revealing that Valdes refused to play for the reserve team. “He is not selected because he does not follow our philosophy,” Van Gaal told the reporters in July. “There is no place for one player [who does not do do that].

The United hierarchy have said to be already started transfer negotiations with Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, according to the Express. Recent rumours claimed that LVG had been keeping an eye on the Colombian, who is believed to have grown frustrated with life at the Bernabeu. There are also reports which suggest that new Real head coach Zinedine Zidane is ready to sell the 24-year-old star, having been very disappointed with his attitude in recent training sessions since Zidane took charge earlier this month. Rodriguez’s agent Jorge Mendes has already started discussions with a number of clubs, including Manchester United.

According to a report from Daily Mirror, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has agreed to sign a new contract with Manchester United. It has been really an impressive season for the 18-year-old starlet, who has played six matches for the first team in senior level in all competitions and the left-back’s development will now be rewarded with a fresh contract, which he is expected to sign next week. The report also claims Borthwick-Jackson will now have a wage of £10,000 per week, having previously been earning £8,000 less than that. The promising defender penned his first professional contract with United in July 2013.

There is also good news for Manchester United fans as La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have finally admitted that they face a tough battle to keep a hold on to Antoine Griezmann, Daily Mirror reports. The 24-year-old French star has long been admired by both Manchester clubs and Chelsea amidst rumours of interests from Real Madrid and PSG. He has netted 43 times in 81 matches since his arrival at Atletico in 2014 and is under contract until 2020. Manager Diego Simeone also has confessed that Griezmann and Atletico could yet receive an offer which they cannot reject either this January or in the summer.
