Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United have been active in this transfer market with a number of purchases and sales of top class players from the club. They had a disappointing season last year but will have a chance to play against the best of Europe in the Champions League. They started their campaign at Old Trafford against the Spurs in a top of the table clash.
In this article, we bring you a review of the first match of this season as Manchester United recorded their first victory of the campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Manchester United (4-5-1):
Sergio Romero, C Smalling, Darmian, Blind, L Shaw, M Carrick, A Young, Schneiderlin, Mata, Rooney, M Depay
Tottenham Hotspurs (4-5-1):
M Vorm, K Walker, B Davies, Alderwiereld, E Dier, J Vertonghen, Bentaleb, Dembele, Chadli, C Eriksen, H Kane
David de Gea was not named in the squad for this game as Romero the new signing was given the position in between the posts for Manchester United. They started with Schweinsteiger and Herrera on the bench as they gave Romero, Darmian, Schneiderlin and Depay their debuts. Alderwiereld was the only new face in the Tottenham squad for the game.
United would have had a horrid start if Eriksen was more composed when he got the first chance of the game in the 4th minute. Kane chipped a delightful ball into the box for Eriksen’s run who tried to chip it over Romero but ended putting it onto the roof of the goal. The travelling team continued their dominance as Walker drew a save from the keeper after a positive run into the danger area.
But in the 22nd minute, Walker put the ball in the back of the net but on the wrong side. United never looked comfortable in possession, but a steal in the midfield to set Ashley Young on the right flank set up the only goal for United. Young crossed into the box and found an un manned Rooney. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, Walker won the ball from under his feet but only managed to push the ball out of the reach of the keeper and into the back of the net.
This goal was out of nowhere as United were looking more and more nervous as the game passed. But this goal settled the nerves at Old Trafford as united slowly started to play confidently. M Carrick was replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger on the hour mark. He received a warm welcome from the supporters, for his debut for the club.
Tottenham upped their game and piled on the pressure on United in the last quarter of the game. After a fine save from Vorm off a shot of Ashley Young, Tottenham had a chance to level it as Eriksen was once again set free. Eriksen had two half chances at goal but Romero made sure he hung onto a clean sheet after keeping out a late shot from Kane to give his club all three points from an un-convincing game.
Louis Van Gaal will be happy with the result but his team still needs a lot of improvement as his team only managed one shot on target for the whole match. M Pochettino would be furious losing all three points from a game he could have won. Both teams have decent fixtures next week and will have to be at their best to maintain their place in the Barclays Premier League.
