It was Sunday afternoon and the venue was the Emirates, as the FA Cup holders Arsenal faced off against their Premier League rivals Watford in the quarter finals of the competition. The Gunners had not been in the best of form in recent weeks and were looking to advance to the next round of the tournament with a win at home. However, things did not work out well for Arsene Wenger’s side on the night. There were quite a few chances for them in the first half, though they failed to capitalize and score. It eventually ended goalless, as neither side broke the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.
After the restart, things did not go well for Wenger’s team who conceded at the 50 minute mark. Odion Ighalo opened the scoring in the match, as he put one past David Ospina. Adlene Guedioura scored a superb second goal 13 minutes later to make it 2-0 for the visitors. Danny Welbeck added a consolation goal for his side to make it 2-1 on the 88th minute, though he also had an amazing chance to equalize for his side a minute later which he wasted as his shot went wide. Gabriel was lucky to be on the pitch after some rash challenges, Eleny could have done a lot better in front of goal and Olivier Giroud failed to fire once again on the night.
The Londoners crashed out of the cup that they held for two consecutive years, with this defeat at home as Quique Sánchez Flores’s side went through to the semi-finals after producing this huge upset.
