Match Report: Manchester City 0-0 Real Madrid

After witnessing last night’s game, it looks like there is a possibility for Manchester City to make it to Milan for next month’s Champions League final, and if they do so, it will be because of the heroics of Joe Hart, which could be the difference between success and failure for Manuel Pellegrini’s team in European competitions.

Without the injured Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo, it was a tense and hard-fought first-leg at the Etihad Stadium, City stood firm to keep their chances alive for next week’s match to the Spanish capital, when Manchester City visit the Santiago Bernabéu.

Facing Real at their own backyard may be one of the worst fixtures, but all City can do is thanking Hart for his brilliance. Now as the score-line was 0-0, a scoring draw will be enough for City to follow the road to Milan.

Pellegrini’s side became the first team ever this season to stop Real Madrid from scoring a goal. But the citizens will thank Joe Hart for the clean sheet they have.

Sergio Ramos connected with the ball from a curling corner kick of Kroos, but all in vain, as the ball ended up being caught by Joe Hart. It was a free header and he also had a clear view of the goal, he should have done better.

Joe Hart was too good for Real Madrid, his heroics denied both Casemiro and Pepe after saving that header from Ramos. Real Madrid will be in real trouble if he continues his form in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu on May 4.

It was the debut Semi-final in the UEFA Champions League for the Sky Blues and they made a lot of the early running. Jesus Navas looked very lively down the right flank, but on the other hand, Madrid also absorbed the pressure pretty well.

Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany wasted many heading opportunities from De Bruyne’s delicious crosses, which left Keylor Navas untested.

Pellegrini received a huge setback at the start of the game, as David Silva limped off just before the half-time, the city boss fielded the Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho ahead of Raheem Sterling as a reward for his brilliant display at stoke.

Karim Benzema had his best chance in the dying moments of the half from Pepe’s help, but the French striker launched it hard and high, over Joe’s goal.

Madrid again dominated in the final 25 minutes as Jese, who replaced Karim Benzema at half-time, jumped over Kompany and his looped header hit the crossbar but a deflection of the top of the bar kept it 0-0, all of this came from a brilliant Dani Carvajal cross.

Yet again! Hart was active to block a close-range chance from Pepe, had that went in, things could have been different! But he denied the Portugal defender from a distance of just three yards.

Keylor Navas was finally tested, at the 90th minute and he had the last say, Carvajal received a yellow and Kevin De Bruyne was over the free-kick in final seconds of injury time, as the two sides head to Madrid with no advantage on either side.
