NorthEast United stunned the Indian Super League leaders by defeating Chennaiyin FC 3-0 at the home stadium. NorthEast United were left with ten men in 72nd minute when Capdevila picked up his second yellow card.
Two goals from Massamba Lo Sambou and one from Durga Boro were enough to take down ISL leaders. Both the goals came in first half of the match, with today’s win NorthEast United is on the fifth spot in Indian Super League. Chennaiyin FC is still on the top of the league table with 19 points from 11 matches.
Chennaiyin FC made 2 changes in the team since Bojan Djordjic and Mikael Silvestre are both out due to injuries. Jean Maurice and Jairo Suarez were included in the team.
NorthEast United made four changes in the team by replacing Issac, Dong-Hyun Do, Aiborlang Khongjee and Robin Gurung with Durga Boro, Boithang Haokip, Felipe de Castro and Massamba Lo Sambou.
The Highlanders started better and made a couple of attacks on the visitors and were rewarded in the 10th minute, when Durga Boro got a ball which came after the header of Djemba-Djemba and was not cleared properly. Boro kicked the ball straight into the net from close range which past Gennaro Bracigliano.
A free kick from Zodingliana Ralte could have given the home side there second goal in the 20th minute but goalkeeper Bracigliano made a wonderful save. In the 21st minute Highlander’s doubled their lead when Koke’s corner kick was headed start into the goal by Lo Sambou.
In the 23rd minute Djemba-Djemba gave away a foul, the resulting freekick by Koke into the box saw Lo Sambou score his second goal of the evening, when he headed the ball again in the goal.
At the half hour mark Pelissari tried a shot at goal but the ball went straight into the hand of goalkeeper TP Rehenesh.
Doungel also wasted a wonderful opportunity when he received a through pass and was in one-on-one situation with Chennaiyin goalkeeper. But he missed the opportunity by hitting the ball straight to Bracigliano.
Jeje got the only chance for Chennaiyin FC in the first half when Lo Sambou was beaten by him, but goalkeeper Rehenesh came to rescue.
Marco Materazzi made two changes in the start of the second half, replacing Jeje Lalpekhlua and Bruno Pelissari with Cristian Hidalgo and Jayesh Rane to improve the attack.
Hidalgo found the back of the net just five minutes into the game after a wonderful ball setup by Maurice and Balwant Singh. But the referee raised the flag for offside.
Balwant missed a wonderful cross by Hidalgo after he put in a wonderful cross inside the box in the 60th minute.
In the 72nd minute NorthEast were left to ten men when Capdevilla was given his second yellow card and was giving marching orders by the referee.
NorthEast kept the game under control and defended their three goal lead with great consistency. Chennaiyin tried to put a lot of pressure in the last minutes of the game but couldn’t find much chance.
The Highlanders won their last match against Delhi Dynamos and are now on the fifth position of Indian Super League table.
