Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has now become the third highest assists provider in the UEFA Champions League since 2007. The Germany international registered his 23rd assists in the Champions League when he provided the assist to Alex Iwobi during Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Basel.
Cristiano Ronaldo with 26 assists leads the list while Barcelona star Lionel Messi is second in the list with 24 assists. But considering the fact the German playmaker was not a regular in his team around 2007 and also played in Europa League with Werder Bremen, his stats are nothing short of incredible.
The playmaker, who was the highest assist maker last term in the Premier League with 19 assists, has not been at his devastating best in the Premier League. He has registered only 2 assists so far but he has been on fire in the continental competition. The German has scored 4 goals in the competition along with registering 3 assists.
Meanwhile, Arsenal finished top of the group in the Champions League for the first time since 2011-12 season. Arsene Wenger’s men ran riot against Basel as they thrashed them 4-1. The Gunners opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Lucas Perez found the back of the net from close range. Eight minutes later, the Spaniard double his goal tally when he tapped home the rebound after Kieran Gibbs’ strike was saved by the Basel goalkeeper. Two minutes after the break, he scored his first hat-trick in Arsenal shirt. Alex Iwobi capped off the fine night for his team when he converted from the Ozil assist before Basel found a consolation goal through Seydou Doumbia.
Paris St-Germain, who were leading the group, needed a victory against Ludogorets Razgrad to finish as the group winners. However, the French champions could only play a 2-2 draw, handing Arsenal the top spot.
