Hannover (Germany), Dec 21 (IANS) Michael Frontzeck resigned as head coach of German football club Hannover 96 on Monday, two days after their 0-1 home defeat against Bayern Munich in the 17th round of the Bundesliga.

“After careful consideration and many discussions, I came to the conclusion to end my work with Hannover 96,” Frontzeck said in a statement released by the club. Hannover only managed to gain 14 points in 17 games, falling to penultimate place in the Bundesliga standings; the team’s worst record since 2002, reports Efe. Frontzeck took over at the end of last season, succeeding Tayfun Korkutt in a struggle against relegation to the second division, and managed to remain in the Bundesliga.

“Unity and confidence are a basic requirement in our situation to work successfully. I currently do not feel this confidence anymore in this environment,” Frontzeck said. “Last season we achieved something big together by avoiding relegation. That was only possible because we gathered all of our strengths, and our entire team and the training staff helped with their confidence,” he explained.

Frontzeck’s successor is not clear, although the media has begun to circulate the name of Thomas Schaaf as the preferred candidate for the post.
