Jose Mourinho loves to get in to opponent team’s heads ahead of any major game. Mourinho has managed to do the same yet again ahead of Chelsea’s league cup final clash against Tottenham.
In a stinging remark, Mourinho claims he turned down Daniel Levy’s request to become Tottenham’s manager in 2007 out of respect to the Chelsea fans. Jose Mourinho left Chelsea in 2007 on a mutual consent and according to Mourinho, Spurs were the first side to offer him a route back to management but he turned them down.
The biggest clause which Mourinho left Chelsea on was not to work in England immediately after exiting the Stamford Bridge. The Special One claimed, Spurs also tried to offer Chelsea a compensation which could have allowed Mourinho to work in England.
Jose also explained that the major reason for Mourinho to decline the Spurs offer in 2007 was the utmost respect he has for the Chelsea fans. It is hardly a surprise that Jose has come up with this statement ahead of the Capital One Cup Final. It has been a classic Mourinho strategy over the years.
Jose won his first title in England beating Spurs in 2005 in a league cup final. He would hope for the history to repeat itself later today when he takes on the Spurs side which humiliated him and Chelsea by beating them 5-3 on New Year’s day.
So far, Mourinho has a (4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses) track record in the 7 games he has managed Chelsea against Spurs in the league.
Speaking in the press conference ahead of the league cup final, Jose clearly stated his desire to manage in England even if he quits Chelsea in coming season. In his rather mystical style, Jose claimed:
‘When I left the first time I had lots of countries to go to and lots of clubs to go to.
‘In this moment when I leave I have another 19 clubs in the Premier League and 22 clubs in the Championship. So the options are not so much.
“But I repeat I am in Mr Abramovich’s hands. Until he wants me to stay, I will stay – and that is what I want.”
It’s hard to understand what Chelsea fans would make out of this claim by Mourinho. One thing is for sure, Mourinho has added an extra spice to league cup final by claiming he turned down Tottenham job in 2007 and Daniel Levy will definitely want to get one over Jose Mourinho.
