There is a famous saying that Diego Costa can start a fight even in an empty room!
Whether that is true or not we don’t know. But we do now know that the Chelsea striker could start a fight with an advertising hoarding.
The passionate Spaniard was involved in a bizarre incident during Chelsea’s final pre-season friendly before the new season begins this weekend.
Midway through the second half of the 4-2 victory over Werder Bremen, Costa tripped backwards over an advertising board and he wasn’t at all happy about it. As he tried to get to his feet the 27-year-old kicked and punched the inanimate object. Thankfully it didn’t fight back.
Costa had earlier found the back of the net, getting on the scoresheet alongside Eden Hazard, Oscar, and Pedro.
Throughout Costa’s two-year stay at Stamford Bridge, there have been rumours regarding an inability to settle in England, problems with learning the language and a desire to return to Spain.
Until now, talk of an exit has been downplayed by the club, which means this is the first time that one of their representatives has given it any credence whatsoever.
This question mark over Costa has given rise to further speculation that Chelsea might be about to make a move for Lukaku, who has again been linked with a return to the club.
The £33 million signing of Michy Batshuayi from Marseille was thought to have put paid to any such reunion but, should Costa leave, there will be an urgent need to add another top-line striker to the squad.
Entering the new campaign with just Premier League new boy Batshuayi, the developing Bertrand Traore and the inconsistent Loic Remy would not be good enough, even if Eden Hazard did show some promise in a striking role with his performances in the last two pre-season friendly.
