Following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista right ahead of the new season, the Arsenal manager was forced to add one more defender to his squad despite the arrival of young centre-back Rob Holding in July.
The signing of German international Shkodran Mustafi has strengthened Arsenal’s options in the defensive department but one issue remains unresolved.
Laurent Koscielny has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal at the Emirates stadium but he is yet to sign a renewal as speculation over his future continues.
The Frenchman is the lifeline of Arsenal defense. No matter who he is paired with, he is unanimously viewed as one of the best defenders in the world and many even go so far as to call him the best defender in the whole of England
According to French outlet SFR Sport though, the 30-year-old has been offered a new contract at the club with talks currently on-going.
The report suggests that Koscielny, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the past, is likely to remain in north London but the player and his representatives have not reached an agreement yet with the Gunners.
With that being said, one of Arsenal’s club policies is to not offer players over the age 30 long-term contracts; an issue which saw Bacary Sagna turn down a one-year extension to join Manchester City two years ago.
Meanwhile, there is talk that Mustafi will push Ozil to sign a new deal and that Alexis will sign one if given a buy-out clause. All of that is well and good, it sounds like things are well under way.
