Borussia Dortmund’s official sources have confirmed that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will not be extending his current contract at the club and is now free to join his rumored suitors Manchester United.
Gundogan’s contract was set to expire in 2016 but the player has refused to sign the extension after Manchester United showed their interest in signing the German midfielder this season. Gundogan has made his comeback from a lengthy injury spell and has been a regular feature in Dortmund’s side this season.
Manchester United are believed to be his destination for now but clubs like Arsenal and Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the player and have expressed their desires to sign the combative midfielder from Borussia Dortmund. United will face stiff challenge from Arsenal and Bayern Munich for Gundogan’s signature.
Earlier in the week, Gundogan was given time till the coming Friday to sort out his future and declare his decision to the club. As it turns out, in the last few hours, Dortmund sources broke the news on the internet regarding Gundogan’s desires of not extending his contract with Dortmund.
This decision leave the door open for Manchester United to sign Ilkay Gundogan who is seen as the long-term replacement for their midfield general Michael Carrick. Gundogan could become the first Manchester United signing this summer in what promises to be the second overhauling at the ckub under Louis Van Gaal.
