OMG!! Klopp angry with these three players despite brilliant win over Hull

Hull City scored from a corner during the Reds’ 5-1 victory on Saturday, the 15th time that a team has netted from a set piece in Klopp’s 36 Premier League games in charge.

However, rather than admit his tactics could be at fault for the problem last weekend, the German has pointed out the errors made by three of his players.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho similarly pointed out problems with Luke Shaw’s performance against Watford this month and was heavily criticised.

“This game was a classic one for losing a bit of concentration. We were so good in this game. It’s an in-swinger but we don’t really adapt. We have an in-swinger formation,” Klopp said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“We are a bit too close to our goal with their targets around the six-yard line.

“Gini [Wijnaldum] has to block it but that means these players [Klavan and Firmino] need to be closer to the situation. If Gini has to block the player, the others should get the ball.

“Ragnar [Klavan] only watches the ball and that’s a little bit of a problem in that situation.

“He could be a bit further back and able to challenge with Gini blocking him.”

Liverpool have the 18th worst record for goals conceded from set pieces in the Premier League since Klopp took over, and those problems show no signs of abating.

While the Reds are the second top scorers with 16 goals this season, they are have conceded the tenth most – more than Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Everton.

Klopp has made subtle changes to the Liverpool team during his first year in charge and the 5-1 demolition of Hull shows they are paying off.

When Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield in October 2015 the Liverpool fans were promised an era of frantic glory and furious attacking football. Instead, Klopp’s reign has been defined by erratic form and numerous false dawns as the players gradually adapted to his highly demanding methods.

But the 5-1 mauling of Hull is a genuine turning point for Klopp and Liverpool. As we approach the one-year anniversary of his appointment things are finally starting to click, thanks largely to the benefits of a full pre-season with the squad and some astute new signings.

Liverpool fans are understandably hesitant in their praise, having witnessed their team tear apart the likes of Dortmund and Manchester City last season only to return to stodgy, disjointed performances the following weekend.

This is because Liverpool’s gung-ho, ultra-fluid tactics have only been successful against similarly expansive sides – until now.
