The son of the Brazilian legend Pele, Edinho, has been asked to serve a sentence pf 33 years in jail for charges of money laundering which were raised from drug trafficking.
Edinho, who is a retired footballer himeself, played goalkeeper for Santos, in the 1990s. Pele himslef spent majority of his proffessional career at that club.
Edinho was earlier arrested wasy back in 2005 and also served a sentence for drug trafficking and for his conatcs with drug mafia in Santos. Edinho does concede that he is a drug addict but denies the trafficking charges. Edinho, 43, was working with Santos as a goalkeeping coach. The ruling was given by a judge in the small city of Praia Grande, in Sao Paulo state.
Brazilian press, meanwhile, have not been able to track down Edinho, whose real name is Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, but various reports say he is expected to appeal in higer court.
Edinho is Pele’s third son from his first marriage and he was just five when the family moved to New York as Pele play for Cosmos in his twilight years.
When Edinho returned to Brazil he decided to start his career in professional football much to his father’s surprise, and became a goalkeeper at Santos.
Edinho was in between the sticks when in 1995 Santos reached the Brazilian league final, eventually losing the title to Botafogo.
His detention and futher revealations of his alleged involvement with drug gangs took most in Brazil by surprise.
Pele, 73, in the past, went to visit his son several times in jail.
In 2006 Pele, while defending his son, said: “God willing, justice will be done. There is not a shred of evidence against my son.”
Meanwhile, four other people have also been found guilty for many laundering, including a man who is dubbed as King-pin of the racket in the region – Ronaldo Duarte Barsotti, a.k.a. Naldinho.
