Pep Guardiola readying £35m bid to lure England international away from Liverpool; Barcelona also interested

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are currently in the middle of the worst run their new manager has ever had in his career. Though a part of it is the sheer competitiveness of the Premier League, a part of it comes down to the lack of personnel in important positions in the squad.

The manager spends close to £150m in his first summer at the club but has not been able to settle into a back four that can win him games consistently.

He has not been able to settle into a starting XI that he trusts and is on the look-out for stars who fit the bill at the Etihad.

And reports today have suggested that he now has an eye on Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne for a move at the end of the season.

The 25-year old full-back is currently the first choice in his position for club and country (alongside Kyle Walker) and is one of the most consistent players in the Premier League.

He had a decent time at the St Marys, where he helped the Southampton side to stay strong in the top flight and has been one of the best players for Liverpool at the back since his move to the club last summer.

He has played 42 of the 47 league games for Liverpool in his time at the club and is currently one of the first names on the team-sheet at Anfield.

However, Pep Guardiola, who is evidently not comfortable with either Bacary Sagna or Pablo Zabaleta at the right-back spot wants to add Clyne to his ranks at the Etihad.

The Liverpool man has considerably better than the City duo with a pass completion rate of 81% with an average of 50 passes per game, he also makes 2.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per 90 minutes as well as 0.4 successful dribbles past opponents.

Guardiola is in desperate need of a right back for the long term as the 33-year-old Bacary Sagna and 31-year-old Pablo Zabaleta are not options that can take the position for years to come.

Reports today suggest that the Manchester City manager is readying a £35m bid to test Liverpool’s resolve at the end of the season.

City is not the only team interested in his signature as Luis Enrique’s Barcelona are also reportedly pondering over a move for the Liverpool man.

The Catalan giants are not really happy with Sergi Roberto as the first choice right-back for the club and the manager wants the 25-year old Liverpool man to add to his squad at the end of the season.

Klopp’s men are currently at the top of the table, level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal and are one of the favorites to win the title. The monetary offers coming from the Etihad might tempt Clyne to switch sides while a chance to win trophies might be too good to turn down with Barcelona. However, it is highly unlikely that the 25-year old Liverpool defender will opt to move out from Anfield next summer.

Do you think Guardiola can lure Clyne away from Liverpool?
