FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique foul-mouthed assistant referee during last night’s Super Copa match against Athletic Bilbao for which he was sent off immediately by the referee.
Barcelona was contesting to overturn a 4-0 deficit from the first leg against fellow La Liga side, Athletic Bilbao. At the 55th minute mark when Barcelona were leading by a goal to nil, Pique reacted fiercely towards the linesman for failing to spot what he considered to be a clear offside call in the 55th minute.
The Spanish central defender charged towards the assistant referee and apparently said: “I s–k on your wh–e mother”.
The referee Velasco Carballo immediately flashed a red card at the player and sent him off which reduced a struggling Barcelona to 10 men.
In his referee’s report, Carballo clarified the exact language used by Gerard Pique on the field.
The report read: “Fifty-five minutes in Barcelona’s No.3, Gerard Pique Bernabeu, was expelled for the following reason: shouting ‘I s*** on your w**** mother’ at the assistant.”
According to the Article 94 of La Liga’s code of ethics, Pique can face a suspension for “using insults, verbal abuse or having an insulting attitude,” four to 12 matches.
Gerard Pique is set to miss the La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames where they were thrashed 4-0 by the same opponent a week back.
It is a huge setback for Luis Enrique as Barcelona’s defensive woes has been exposed this season. They had conceded four times against Sevilla in the European Super Cup but somehow managed to win that tie.
