It has been confirmed now that La Liga giants Real Madrid have been knocked out of the Cop del Rey competition, in the most shocking manner. The elimination did not come due to a loss, instead came due to the fielding of the suspended Denis Cheryshev against Cadiz. The Russian winger was not supposed to play the game on their travels, after being banned when on loan at Villarreal in the previous campaign. However, he started the match, scoring before being taken off early in the second half, in his side’s 3-1 win over their opponents.
In a press conference on Thursday, club president Florentino Perez spoke about this whole matter and told the media, “The one-match ban for three yellow cards in our view is not effective because no-one has notified the player as specified in item 41.2 of the Disciplinary Code of the RFEF.”
Further, after the game, head coach Rafa Benitez also talked about this issue and insisted that it was not his biggest concern ahead of their game with Getafe as he stated, “The president has made things clear. That is the truth, and there is nothing more to say on our part,” Benitez said, with his team trying to build on last weekend’s 2-0 league win at Eibar.”
“The president has already explained the situation. We are here to speak about the Getafe game. Everything that happened was clear. I will not go into these issues.”
If they do get eliminated now due to this silly error that was made, it would be quite embarrassing for the Bernabeu-based side and it would be quite interesting to see who takes the blame now.
Madrid, however, look certain to appeal the ban in CAS (court of arbitration). It will be interesting as to how this saga will play out in next couple of weeks!
