Specialist agents were called to the ground on Friday after a packet addressed to Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez led to a chemical alert.
A suspicious package addressed to club president Florentino Perez caused a scare at Real Madrid’s home stadium on Friday afternoon.
Concerns were raised at around lunchtime at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, which houses club offices, when the packet – which had been sent from Italy – was found to contain an unidentified white powder.
Madrid played Italian club Napoli in the last 16 of the Champions League. It advanced 6-2 on aggregate after a 3-1 win in Naples on Tuesday.
After several hours of confusion, the authorities were alerted in the evening and the emergency protocol for such incidents was activated.
The police and fire brigade arrived at the ground accompanied by agents specialising in chemicals, who examined the contents of the package.
Disinfection procedures were carried out on all Bernabeu staff, while police also evacuated the shopping centre located on the corner of the stadium.
The substance discovered has been collected and sent for further tests, but initial analysis saw officials move to rule out any threat.
