My relationship with Mourinho has never been bad, says Manchester United star

When Jose Mourinho was appointed Manchester United manager this summer, there were lots of questions about how he would treat Juan Mata. The Spain international fell out of favour with the Portuguese manager during his time at Chelsea. Despite winning Chelsea’s player of the year award for two consecutive seasons, Mata was regularly left out of the starting lineup and Mourinho eventually sold him to United in 2014 for £37million departure to their Premier League rivals.
The doubts increased when Daily Mail reported that Mourinho previously held talks with United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the possibility of selling the midfielder.
However, Mata has denied all the rumours of falling out of favour with Mourinho at Chelsea and said that his relationship with his boss “has never been bad”.
“My relationship with Mourinho has never been bad,” Mata said.
“Many lies were told about me and Mourinho when he arrived at the club this summer. It bothered me that every day I had to read and listen to rumours that were not true. With him I am fine.
“You read a lot of comments on Facebook and Twitter but they just make you laugh.”
Well, looking at Mata’s involvement in United’s games so far, it is safe to say that he is an important part of Mourinho’s plans. The midfielder has featured prominently for the Red Devis so far. He has played in five of United’s six league fixtures so far, including the 4-1 win over Leicester last weekend.
Reports are suggesting that Mata is happy at Old Trafford and is desperate to extend his contract with the club.
As quoted in The Sun, a source said: “There have been talks, but Juan is still in the dark over his future at the club. He is desperate to stay and likes his life in the Manchester area. It is all down to Jose’s decision now.
And Mata has proved the rumours right when he said that he wants to stay at the club to win silverwares.
“I really want to lift titles at Manchester United, the Premier League is a trophy I have never won but I believe we can do it with this group,” Mata said.
