As Liverpool prepare to battle Turkish giants Besiktas in the round of 32 clash in Europa league we take a look at the last time when these two teams faced each other. Liverpool fans will surely remember that game from 2007-08 season as it is regarded as one of the most amazing European matches being played at Anfield. Liverpool recored an astonishing 8-0 victory over the Turkish side.

Liverpool came in to the game with their qualification to the knockout rounds in danger. Liverpool were locked on 7 points and a loss against Besiktas would have meant a nervy battle against Marseille to advance to the next stage. What followed on the night is still edged as one of the best European nights at Anfield.

Liverpool ran riot against their Turkish opponent and thrashed them 8-0 on the night. The scoreline seemed the perfect result as Liverpool had lost 2-1 to Besiktas earlier in the groupstage. Liverpool’s dominant win saw them end with 10 points and finish the group with a stunning goal difference of (+13). Such a result ensured Liverpool’s progress to the knock out rounds of the Champions League.

Hero on the night for the reds was Yossi Benayoun, who scored a magical hat trick and enjoyed his best moment as a Liverpool player. Goals came from Peter Crouch (19,89), Benayoun (32,53,56), Gerrard (69), Babel (79, 81).

Liverpool’s starting 11 on the night saw the likes of Javier Mascherano, Peter Crouch, Jamie Carragher, Sami Hypia and Yossi Benayoun take to field and completely destroy Besiktas on the night.

Liverpool did manage to get pass Besiktas very easily with the team put out but they did have the option of playing Fernando Torres (in form at that time) and Dirk Kuyt as well but Rafa Benitez knew his side’s potential and stuck with Crouch and Voronin and it worked for the manager as Liverpool made a light work of the Turkish challenege.

Take a look at the most complete performance by Liverpool in a European game when they battered Besiktas and scored 8 goals pass the Turkish side. Goal scorers were Peter Crouch, Yossi Benayoun, Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel.

Besiktas play Liverpool in the round of 32 clash against the reds and they will have to come back to Anfield and it is needless to say that memories of their last visit to teh Anfield will still haunt them. Liverpool fans will make sure of the fact that Besiktas players, coaches and fans are reminded of “what happened when Liverpool played Besiktas last time”
