Reports: Maradona Was Involved In FIFA’s Decision To Suspend Messi

The big talking point on Tuesday afternoon was that FIFA had sensationally decided to slap Lionel Messi with a four-match international ban just hours before Argentine were due to take on Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier.

The Barcelona man allegedly aimed a foul-mouthed tirade at an assistant referee during their victory over Chile last week, and he landed himself in hot water despite there being no mention of the incident in the referee’s match report at the time.

Some reports are claiming that FIFA didn’t even inform the Argentine FA of the decision, and they will now lodge a formal appeal to get it overturned.

However, while the whole affair has left fans with a sour taste in the mouth, there is another element to the story that is being reported that shows just how insidious football politics can really be.

Diego Maradona, World Cup winner, famous philanderer, and all round football legend is rightly held in high regard in the South American country, but he could now find himself on the other side of fans’ affections after the story took another twist.

El Diego once managed the Argentine national team at the 2010 World Cup and given the endless comparisons between the two, it’s fair to say that Maradona knows him well.

But Maradona is now a fully fledged FIFA ambassador, and according to Journalist Gonza Stupenengo it was the great man himself who gave the green light for the ban to go ahead.

“I spoke someone who works at FIFA and he confirmed to me that Maradona pushed for Messi’s sanction,” he tweeted.

Argentina’s form in the qualifiers has been patchy, and Messi’s presence would be sorely missed, though as it stands the only thing that separates Maradona from Messi is that the former has managed to lift a World Cup for his country.

Is it possible that Maradona has stabbed Messi in the back because he is scared of losing the one thing he has to laud over the 29-year-old?

Maradona has done some vindictive things in his life, but you would hope that at the age of 56 he’d have grown out of this kind of behaviour.
