It’s still hard to believe that Chelsea re-signed David Luiz on the final day of the summer transfer window last week.
It will surely go down as one of the most sensational and unexpected deadline-day deals ever.
The Blues didn’t appear to be in need of an error-prone Brazilian defender, who can also double-up as a central midfielder, but Antonio Conte clearly felt otherwise.
Paris Saint-German agreed to sell the 29-year-old for a £16 million loss – just days after what would turn out to be his final calamitous performance for the French champions, against AS Monaco – and Lucas Piazon, a fellow Brazilian at Chelsea, has revealed his compatriot’s first words after returning to Stamford Bridge last week.
“It was crazy,” Piazon told the Daily Mail. “I was one of the first to see him.
“I said: ‘I can’t believe you’re here’. He laughed and said: ‘You never know what to believe in football.’”
Indeed, when Daily Mail broke the story about Luiz’s potential return to Chelsea on the night before the transfer window closed, it sounded like classic deadline-day nonsense.
However, it turned out to be absolutely spot on. Twenty-four hours later and Luiz had completed his shock return to west London, to the delight of the club’s fans.
“He’s a good guy, always happy and trying to make people feel well. He’s a great team-mate and a great centre back. He’ll be an important player for Chelsea.”
Luiz is now in line to make his second Chelsea debut against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
