Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named three defenders who will surely start in the season opener against Tottenham Hotspurs on August 8th.

Newly recruited right back Matteo Darmian is among the three defenders. The other two being Luke Shaw in the left back position and Daley Blind as center back.

Daley Blind who is predominantly a left full back possesses qualities of playing as a center back or defensive midfielder. Louis van Gaal had used this versatile player in the holding midfield position last season and he did a commendable job. This time during the pre-season matches, Blind catered the role of a central defender and did very well.

Speaking to reporters after United’s lost against PSG in the final game of the International Cricket Council, he said: “I have to start with the formation and when the formation is doing well, I let them pay in that formation.

“I think I shall play [Luke] Shaw with [Matteo] Darmian, and with Daley Blind. The right central position I have to consider. I am very pleased with the performance of Matteo Darmian, and you can see he can play on the right and left.

“Also, a benefit of this year’s tour is that we don’t have any injuries. Last year I was forced to use, for example, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in the first Premier League match. Now, I have a wider selection and I can use everybody who I think I have to use.

“There is more competition now and there is more balance in the selection. I have a lot of confidence to start the competition.”

Manchester United have a brilliant midfield this season with inclusions of Moragn Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger. They also have a decent strike force with Wayne Rooney leading the department. But the backline is pretty aweful which spoils the balance of the squad.

Louis van Gaal was after Sergio Ramos and Nicolas Otamendi this summer to bolster his defense, but now it appears that none of the players might turn up at Old Trafford.

In this circumstances, Daley Blind is the best possible option at center back. His partner though will be decided by the Dutch manager in the coming few days. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo are the possible contenders for the position.
