West Ham central defender James Tomkins has accused Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie of elbowing him on purpose in West Ham’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday. James Tomkins has raised questions on Van Persie’s “Intentional Elbow” against the defender which knocked out Tomkins and left him with a broken nose.
Replays have shown how Van Persie took a look over his shoulder while he jumped high to challenege an aerial ball. During the challenege Van Persie’s elbow struck Tomkins bang on the face and knocked him to the ground. James Tomkins spoke to the media after the game and he was asked about Van Persie’s challenge on him. Tomkins had following things to say:
‘The nose is a bit swollen,’ Tomkins said in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw. ‘Fellaini was the second time in the match when I broke it. He has always got that about him when he goes up with his hands a lot.
‘It is tough to say that he does it deliberately, but with the Van Persie one, I think he had a look at me first and then he has gone for me. I think that was more malicious than the other one, even though I came out worse the second time.’
Referee Mark Clattenburg was right on the sight where incident took place and deemed the challenge not even worth a yellow card. Clattenburg gave Van Persie a brief talking and warned him not to make any rash challenge in the remaining minutes of the game. Tomkins found it hard to believe.
Tomkins was heard saying that, the fould was at least deserving of a yellow card. He was not asking for Van Persie’s sending off but he was clearly left gutted by Clattenburg’s decision to let the United striker get away with a foul, which was deemed intentional by James Tomkins.
In recent weeks, we have seen The FA take charge of such incidents and give out their verdict and judgement based on the video replays, Diego Costa being the recepient of such ban.
If that is the case in this situation as well, then I see Van Persie picking a small ban or hefty fine, because the challenege did appear to be intentional. Van Persie has had this mean side to his game through out his career where he takes on the defenders in the most cheekiest of manners.
As for James Tomkin, night of misery was not done. Later in the match he was caught directly in the face yet again by United’s substitute Marouanne Fellaini. Despite the rough night, Tomkins held his own and carried his side to a well deserved 1-1 draw. Manchester United scored late through Daley Blind to salvage a point or else, the victory would have been a fair result as well.
