Roma have launched a £25million bid for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma who joined the Premier League champions for just £12m in 2012, according to the Sunday People.

The 20 year old French centre-back is third choice at Stamford Bridge with manager Jose Mourinho also seeking to land Everton prodigy John Stones.

Roma’s French coach Rudi Garcia has put Zouma top of his wishlist to replace Alessio Romagnoli, who has joined AC Milan for £22m.

And the Serie A club will offer a lucrative loan deal if a permanent signing cannot be agreed.

Zouma made 26 appearances for Chelsea last season, scoring twice.

Some injuries unsettled the early months of his career at the club but the 20-year-old soon showed what he was capable of as Jose Mourinho even started in him defensive midfield during the final of the Capital One cup due to suspension to Nemanja Matic and injury to John Obi Mikel.

Now, though, with Chelsea still keen on signing Everton’s John Stones, AS Roma are apparently interested in taking Zouma on loan.

It would be a shock to see Chelsea allow the French star to leave when he’s the back-up for both Cahill and Terry in defence at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea do not have any more central defender as a cover to the ageing center back pair.

Garcia may well be a big fan of the talented Frenchman, but there’s huge doubt over whether Jose Mourinho would allow such a deal to go through.

Alessio Romagnoli is transferred to Milan and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa about to move to Lyon. So Roma have the need to strengthen the defensive line with only Manolas and Castan in that role for the Giallorossi.

Zouma is the first choice of Rudi Garcia as the defender has been scouted for several years by the sporting director Walter Sabatini who monitored since his Saint-Etienne days.
