According to latest reports in Italy, Roma are keen to sign Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen as they look to strengthen their defense.
The club has already signed Federico Fazio from Tottenham Hotspur but feels to sign a top class defender to cover for the injuries of new signing Antonio Rudiger and Mario Rui.
Roma are keen on a loan deal and with the arrivals of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne, the club is open to letting the player leave on a loan deal with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the loan spell. The 30-year old is considered surplus to their requirements as the Catalan club is keen to offload him this summer.
Vermaelen has made only 11 appearances for the Catalans since his move to Barcelona in 2014. However, Barcelona have put a massive €15 million price tag on the player who barely featured for them during his time in the last two seasons.
Roma are willing to offer only €10-12m with an initial loan deal. The player has reportedly drawn interest from former club Arsenal as well as West Ham United.
However, Roma would go for Real Madrid’s Nacho if a deal with Barcelona for Thomas Vermaelen could not be struck as the Italian giants are in serious need of a central defender.
