Goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro extended their lead over Barcelona at the La Liga summit to five points.
It was a hard-fought win for Zinedine Zidane’s side, with the Frenchman having to make some tough decisions.
Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to five points with the narrow win at the San Mames Stadium.
Second-placed Barcelona, who have played the same amount of games as Real, host Valencia on Sunday.
Athletic went into the game with the second-best home record in the league behind Real, and boasting just one defeat all season at the San Mames, which came against Barcelona in August.
Real weathered some early pressure to take the lead as Cristiano Ronaldo squared for Benzema and the France striker placed a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The first half was a heated affair with Casemiro, Dani Carvajal and Aduriz all booked.
Ronaldo was hooked after 79 minutes with Isco brought on in his place.
And Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the former Manchester United star is fuming about it.
The Portugal international believed Bale should have been substituted instead given his poor performance.
Bale failed to spark into life with Ronaldo outperforming the Wales international on the day.
But Zidane chose to keep the former Tottenham star on the pitch – much to his team-mates’ annoyance.
Ronaldo is said to be fearing his place as Madrid’s talisman is under threat.
He also lost out on the chance to close the gap on Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Shoe award.
