It is the weekend of the El Clasico! It’s the 1st battle between the two heavyweights of Spain this season and as always will be one hell of a game.
If you are thinking why so much fuss about a match then first of all I feel sorry for you my friend! The El Clasico is not just a match; it is the representation of one of the biggest rivalry that dates back to many generations. The rivalry has been epitomised in the fight for Alfredo Di Stefano with both Real Madrid and Barcelona claiming that they have Stefano’s registration and contract and ultimately after an intervention from FIFA did the matter settle and Stefano became a Real Madrid legend(ouch!), it was in Luis Figo’s transfer and the pig to the head, in poking Vilanova’s eye! For all the bitterness between the clubs, football has always won in an El Clasico from the playing spirit between Casillas and Xavi to the standing ovation to Roanldinho at the Bernebau.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are two of the biggest clubs in Europe and showcase some of the biggest names and talents in the footballing community from Di Stefano to Cruyff, Zidane to Henry, Raul to Roanldinho and now Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
The contest between Ronaldo and Messi has been the biggest and one of the most entertaining sporting rivalries of this era. Both of them have dominated the world of football with a total of 7 Ballon d ‘ors between them. There is hardly any record in the sport that is not named to either of the two.
While the little magician’s name is in the Guinness book of world records for scoring the most number of goals in a calendar year (91 goals); Ronaldo is the only footballer in history to have scored a goal in every minute of the game! They share the record for the most number of international goals, the record for scoring over 60 goals across all competitions in 2 consecutive seasons, and most appearances in the FIFPro world XI (8 times)! That is the greatness of these two. That is the level of competition between these two geniuses.
Both Roanldo and Messi have found a perfect nemesis in each other which makes them strive to be better than their counterpart. And when one talks about the El Clasico one cannot ignore the impact these two have on the game both on and off the pitch. While Ronaldo enjoys an upper hand when it comes to the European competition holding the record for the most goals scored in Champions League history; when it comes to the Spanish league, the Argentinean reigns supreme by just a pinch.
In a head to head comparison between Ronaldo and Messi, both of them stand on equal ground when it comes to their goal scoring abilities. In the 23 games between the Los Blancos and the Catalans both the heavyweights have found the back of the net on 15 occasions. But what marks the difference between the two are the number of assists. While Messi boasts of 10 assists Ronaldo’s tally stands at a puny 1. The stats in the Clasico favour Messi but the world knows the power of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. He scores for the team and recently has been creating chances for the likes of Isco.
Messi’s presence in the Clasico is doubtful and we might not get a chance of watching BBC and MSN in action as Benzema’s presence is also doubtful. Roanldo is tagged as non performer in big games and it doesn’t get bigger than this. This game decides who sits on top of the league table and Ronaldo will have will take the home away from a tattered Barcelona defense. And lastly an advice to Benitez offense is the best defense so let the counter attack flow and let it rip!
