Shocking Bid: Arsenal to move for 31-year-old EPL centre-back

Arsenal are ready to bid for Swansea defender Ashley Williams as he is searching for an experienced cover ahead of the upcoming season, according to a report from Express Sport.

31-year-old Williams, who led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, is valued at around £10million and has another two years left to run on his current contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Meanwhile, Wenger is desperate to bolster his back four, with Per Mertesacker ruled out for at least the first half of the season following a knee surgery.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman could also join the race for Williams.

The 31-year-old defender, who has made over 300 appearances since joining the Swans from Stockport County in 2008. Williams has been on holiday since leading Wales to the semi-final of Euro 2016 and returns to training on Wednesday, 3 August.

Arsenal are also looking into the possibility of striking a £10m deal for Swansea City defender Federico Fernandez, with West Brom’s Jonny Evans the latest man to be linked with a move to the Emirates.

Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi is another Arsenal target but Wenger doesn’t want to activate the German international’s £42m release clause.

Wenger still has Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista in his ranks, but with youngsters Calum Chambers and Rob Holding the only other central defenders at his disposal, Wenger is expected to be in the ranks for a new centre-back before next month’s transfer deadline.

With some new names added to the frame after it was revealed that Arsenal are in talks to sign Valencia star Shkodran Mustafi, Wenger appears to have a number of targets in the heart of defence – and with a month to land one, Gunners fans will expect a new centre-back signed before the deadline.
