Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers to sign world-class strikers to reduce the burden on their main striker Daniel Sturridge.
After selling Suarez to Barcelona for 75million Pounds, the attack of Liverpool heavily relied on Daniel Sturridge but he was fragile throughout the season.
Daniel Sturridge is sidelined for most of the season due to his injuries and made a mere 18 appearances in all competitons this season. Phil Thompson asks Liverpool to buy world-class strikers to compensate the absence of Sturridge.
Rodgers has Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Borini as back-up strikers but none of them played to their potential this season. Recently Burnley’s striker Danny Ings is also heavily linked to Anfield this summer.
Thompson asks Liverpool to sign the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani inorder to pose a serious challenge for the league title which they have never won since 1990.
He said, “Sturridge’s latest injury confirms that you cannot rely on him throughout the course of a season and Liverpool need suitable cover for him.
“It’s always been the way for Sturridge, he’s proving quite fragile and we might not see the best of him until next season now. Burnley’s Danny Ings doesn’t have the experience to carry that weight and I think Brendan Rodgers needs to bring in a more established striker.
“Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani or somebody of that ilk is required, which means Liverpool are going to have to spend big to be considered title contenders next season.”
He added, “There will be quite a few offloaded and Rodgers might have a bit of a clear out. I think it will be very difficult for Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini to remain and, whether the club want to move them on or not, I think they’re going to want to seek pastures new.”
