Ahead of the release of his new book “Leading”, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he could have signed eight huge players during his time at Old Trafford, but the deals fell through for one reason or another.
The 73-year-old retired from management in 2013 after his 26-year brilliant service to the Red Devils and he revealed that he could have signed eight huge stars but could not due to some reasons.
What a team it would have been with these huge stars in United shirt. The players are:
1> Petr Cech
The Arsenal goalkeeper who became a Chelsea legend during his 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge could have joined Manchester United back then according to the Scotsman.
“I went to see him in 2003 for Rennes.”
“We thought Petr was a bit young for the bruisers in the Premier League.”
2> Didier Drogba
Another Chelsea legend, he wanted at Old Trafford but could not get him due to too much asking price.
“We went to check him out [at Marseille] but the club wanted £25million and Chelsea moved in for the kill before we had made up our minds.”
3> Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima
The Brazilian legend also was wanted by the Scottish manager but could not get him due to work permit issues.
“We wanted to sign the Brazilian striker from Cruzeiro in 1994, but we could not get a work permit and he went to PSV Eindhoven.”
4> Thomas Muller
The Bayern Munich forward, who is still linked with a big-money move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich. Louis van Gaal might be furious with the former manager for not getting him back then when Muller was only ten years old.
“He was a ten-year-old when we heard about him.”
“We had him watched and the following day he committed himself to Bayern Munich.”
5> Sergio Aguero
The Manchester City star forward could have been an asset for their local rivals if Ferguson was prepared to pay his agent some cash.
His agent was demanding a price a price we were not prepared to pay.”
6> Lucas Moura
This is a story from recent past. The Brazilian wonder kid joined Paris Saint-Germain rather than Red Devils.
“We offered £35 million, but Paris Saint-Germain signed him for £45million.”
7> Raphael Varane
One of the biggest talents in world football could have been a part of Red Devils’ long-term project but Zidane took a part in the deal for Real Madrid to convince him to join Real Madrid.
“In 2011 I hurtled down to Lille.”
“Zinedine Zidane got wind of this and somehow scooped him up for Real Madrid.”
8> Mario Balotelli
The bad boy of football who is currently contracted to Liverpool and loaned to AC Milan, also could have joined the Red Devils.
“In 2010 I briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mario Balotelli, the talented but controversial Italian striker.
“I did my homework on him, speaking to a few Italian contacts, but the feedback I got confirmed it was too big a risk.”
“I don’t know whether this sort of candid professional courtesy exists in other fields, but for me it was a Godsend.”
