Chris Smalling has stated that he is not fazed if Manchester United signs Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos or any other reputed center back and the English international is ready for challenges for a position in starting XI.
Ramos has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the recent weeks and Van Gaal wants the World Cup winner with Spain to become a part of the major summer overhaul at the Theatre od dreams.
Smalling, who committed his future at Old Trafford last season to stay at the club that ties him to United until 2019, said, I think it’s a case of where at Manchester United there’s always competition. Even when I signed [the fresh terms] there were 5 centre backs who I had to work hard to get past.
The 25-year-old said, So I always knew I was going to be compared against the best because United can always challenge for the best and I’m up for that challenge.
Last season, Smalling impressed despite of poor defensive performance from the Red Devils and became the first choice of Van Gaal and also captained the side.
I hope high performances can keep me in the team, the central defender said.
I think once you set a new benchmark it’s a case of aiming higher and not letting your standards drop below that and I’m hoping for an injury-free start to the season and the season in general.
Manchester United have plenty of options at the center of the defense with Rojo, Smalling, Jones, McNair and Blackett and the club is still in the market for a world class stopper and Ramos and Otamendi both are linked heavily.
We can expect lot of competition for a starting place for the 20 time League champions next season.
